December 9, 2022 - Backyard Winter Fire

Location: Home in Sparks, NV

Activity: Backyard Fire

Duration: 3 Hours

Cocktail: Cinnamon Gingerbread Eggnog

Trip Details: Usually this section is the more interesting aspect to write (and hopefully to read), but given the holiday season and the Winter weather, my typical weekend excursion was not as adventurous as other ones. I certainly enjoy a backyard fire, and thanks to this Blog, an excuse to try a new cocktail. However, there isn't a lot to detail when it comes to a "trip" for this post.

I did choose this particular date since the evening wasn't as brisk as it had been previously. This weekend was in the 40's, which is nice sitting by the fire weather. It was also a dry weekend with no rain or snow in the forecast. I also happened to have extra branches with dried out pine needles from last year's Christmas tree in my firewood bin to help get the fire started. Sort of a fitting end for that tree considering it is Christmas time and my current tree is inside, decorated, green and healthy...and will contribute to another fire in its future.

Drink Details: I wanted to do an Eggnog-based cocktail for the holiday season. The nice thing about spiked Eggnog is that there are so many possibilities of what to add. Brandy, rum, whiskey, vodka, and various combinations of those. Seeing a Fireball option for Eggnog was something unique, so it stuck out to me as something interesting to try. The name didn't hurt either. Cinnamon Gingerbread Eggnog. Sounded promising.

The taste, however, was like Fireball in Eggnog. Makes sense given that's what the recipe was, but the two flavors didn't merge into one interesting cocktail. I feel I could have created the same taste with a strange drop-and-drink type of scenario where I drop a shot of Fireball into a glass of Eggnog and chug it.

You can see by the photo, there are so many spices. Allspice, Cloves, Cinnamon, and Ginger stirred into the cocktail, all topped with some Whipped Cream and Nutmeg. Yet, this seemed to have no real effect on the overall taste somehow.

Definitely glad I tried it, but I won't be going back to this one again. On the bright side, not pictured was a White Russian version I tried as well. Kahlua, Vodka, and Eggnog, topped with Whipped Cream and Nutmeg. That was far superior and will definitely go back to that in the future. This does demonstrate my earlier premise that Eggnog gives you a lot of options. Try one thing and then try another and then try another until your Eggnog carton is empty.

Photo Description: This photo was taken on a tree stump I found while off-roading one day with my brother. I intended to use it as firewood, but it makes for a nice firepit seat. I attempted to time the process of starting the fire, making the cocktail, and setting up the photo right at dusk to help showoff the fire, without it being too dark outside. I think it worked out fairly well. I also didn't want to take too long with the photo given the fact Eggnog is best served not boiled by the fire behind it.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
